The Servings-Per-Container Math, Explained
Two bottles, two price tags — and two very different real costs per dose once you do the actual division. Here's the plain arithmetic behind serving size and servings per container, and why proprietary blends can make part of that math impossible to finish.
Stand in front of a supplement shelf long enough and two bottles of what looks like the same thing will have two different prices, two different capsule counts, and a label that answers almost none of the question you actually came to ask: which one is cheaper to actually take? The sticker price on the front of the bottle isn't that answer. The real answer is buried in three smaller numbers on the Supplement Facts panel — serving size, servings per container, and how many of those servings you actually need per day — and most shoppers never do the division.
The three numbers that actually matter
Every Supplement Facts panel is required to show a serving size (how many capsules, tablets, or scoops count as "one serving") and, in most cases, servings per container. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's own consumer guidance on reading these labels is blunt about where to start: look at the servings per container and the serving size before anything else, because every other number on the label — including how much of an ingredient you're getting — is stated per serving, not per bottle and not per capsule.
That distinction is the whole trick. A bottle of 120 capsules sounds like more supplement than a bottle of 60. But if the 120-capsule bottle has a serving size of 4 capsules, it only contains 30 servings — fewer real doses than a 60-capsule bottle with a serving size of 1. Capsule count is a manufacturing detail. Servings per container is the number that tells you how long the bottle actually lasts and, once you bring price into it, what a single real dose costs.
The formula itself is simple arithmetic:
Cost per serving = Price ÷ Servings per container.
If the label doesn't print servings per container directly, you can get there yourself: Servings per container = Total capsules (or tablets, or scoops) ÷ Serving size.
A worked example: same nutrient, same dose, very different cost
Here's a realistic side-by-side using round numbers. Imagine two magnesium glycinate products from the same shelf, both delivering the same 200 mg of elemental magnesium in a full labeled serving — the only difference is how many capsules it takes to get there.
Bottle A — 240 capsules, $27.99, serving size 4 capsules (50 mg elemental magnesium per capsule).
Servings per container: 240 ÷ 4 = 60.
Cost per serving: $27.99 ÷ 60 = $0.47 per day.
Bottle B — 90 capsules, $14.99, serving size 1 capsule (200 mg elemental magnesium per capsule).
Servings per container: 90 ÷ 1 = 90.
Cost per serving: $14.99 ÷ 90 = $0.17 per day.
Bottle A has nearly three times as many capsules sitting in it and looks, on the shelf, like the bulk buy. Once you divide by servings per container instead of by capsule count, Bottle B turns out to cost roughly a third of what Bottle A costs for the identical daily dose. Nothing about the "bigger bottle" was dishonest — it genuinely holds more capsules — but more capsules and more real servings are not the same claim, and only one of them determines what you're actually paying per dose.
Why a bigger bottle isn't automatically the better deal
The magnesium example above is the general pattern, not a special case. It shows up anywhere a brand sells the "same" formula in different serving-size configurations — a 2-capsule-per-day version and a 1-capsule "concentrated" version of the same product line are a common example, and the concentrated version often needs fewer capsules per serving, which quietly changes the servings-per-container math even when the bottle sizes look similar. The only way to know which one is actually cheaper per dose is to run the division yourself; the larger container, the lower price-per-bottle, and the "value size" label on the front are all marketing framing, not a substitute for the arithmetic.
Where the math stops working: proprietary blends
All of the above assumes you know how much of the ingredient you care about is actually in a serving. That assumption breaks down the moment a label lists a "proprietary blend," "complex," or "matrix." Under FDA labeling rules, a manufacturer using a blend name is required to disclose the total combined weight of the blend and to list the ingredients inside it in descending order by weight — but is not required to disclose how much of any single ingredient within that blend you're getting. As the Department of Defense's Operation Supplement Safety program explains it, the label tells you the blend's total weight and which ingredient is present in the largest amount, but the specific milligram amount of any one ingredient inside a proprietary blend is simply not information the label has to provide.
Here's what that does to the cost-per-dose math using a joint-support example. Suppose "Joint Complex" costs $32.99 for 90 capsules, serving size 3 capsules, so servings per container is 30 and cost per serving is $32.99 ÷ 30 = $1.10 a day. That part of the arithmetic still works fine. But the label lists a "Joint Support Complex, 1,500 mg" containing glucosamine HCl, chondroitin sulfate, MSM, and turmeric root extract, in that order, with no individual amounts given. You know glucosamine is the largest single ingredient in that 1,500 mg total. You do not know if that means 1,200 mg of glucosamine and 300 mg split three ways, or something closer to an even 375 mg each — and there is no way to finish that calculation from the label alone.
Compare that to a competing product that discloses ingredients individually instead of as a blend: "Glucosamine sulfate, 1,500 mg" per serving, 60 capsules, serving size 2, $19.99. Servings per container: 60 ÷ 2 = 30. Cost per serving: $19.99 ÷ 30 = $0.67 a day. That product is both cheaper per serving and tells you, with certainty, that you're getting a full 1,500 mg of glucosamine every time — a comparison the blended product simply cannot offer, no matter how the arithmetic is arranged, because one of the two numbers you'd need to finish it was never printed.
Worth keeping in mind
A low cost per dose only answers a math question — it doesn't tell you whether that dose is an amount worth taking, or whether a given supplement is a good fit for you. Those are separate questions from the arithmetic on this page. A short checklist for the next label you pick up
1. Find the serving size — how many units make up "one serving."
2. Find (or calculate) servings per container: total units ÷ serving size.
3. Divide the price by servings per container. That's your real cost per dose — not price divided by capsule count.
4. Check whether the ingredient you actually want is listed with its own milligram amount, or buried inside a named "blend." If it's in a blend, treat the ingredient-specific cost math as unavailable rather than guessing at it.
Our take
None of this arithmetic requires anything beyond division, and none of it requires assuming a brand is acting in bad faith — a bigger bottle, a smaller "concentrated" bottle, and a proprietary blend are all legitimate label choices a company is allowed to make. The problem is only that the sticker price and the capsule count on the front of the bottle were never designed to answer "what does one real dose cost," and a label that discloses a blend by total weight instead of by individual ingredient genuinely cannot answer "how much of the one ingredient I want am I getting." Running the servings-per-container division yourself, and being honest about when a blend makes the rest of the math impossible to finish, is the difference between guessing and actually knowing.
